USC School of Medicine Columbia Physician Assistant Program, Columbia, SC

The PA program at the USC School of Medicine Columbia is a program that while young — founded in 2017 with an inaugural class of 20 students — plays an integral role in providing healthcare to the state of South Carolina.

Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) – Carolinas Campus, Spartanburg, SC

The mission of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is to prepare globally minded, community-focused osteopathic physicians to meet the needs of rural and medically underserved populations and advance research to improve human health.

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, also known as DOs, are licensed in every state to practice the full scope of medicine: examination, diagnosis, writing prescriptions, performing surgery, and providing musculoskeletal manipulation.

Osteopathic physicians staff every field of medicine from family practice to neurosurgery. However, the majority of DOs practice primary care, with approximately one-fourth providing care in small communities and rural areas.

SC INBRE-Supported/
Recommended Core

Molecular Analytics Core, located at MUSC in Charleston, SC

The mission of the core is to provide MUSC and other regional investigators with expertise, instrumentation, training, and services for a range of molecular technologies. 

The core currently offers Bioanalyzer service for qualitative analysis of eukaryotic total RNA and quantitative analysis of DNA libraries. Several instruments are available to users, including qPCR, PCR, NanoDrop, microplate reader, and Qubit fluorometers. Following certification of training, users are free to schedule their use at their convenience. 

The core also offers bioinformatic analysis in support of bulk RNA-seq data analysis and other miscellaneous applications (database mining, cloning design, etc.) 

For RNA-seq projects, the core can access raw data from providers, run data analysis pipelines, securely store the data until publication, and assist users with submission of project data to public archives.

Clemson University Genomics and Bioinformatics Facility, Clemson, SC

The Clemson University Genomics and Bioinformatics Facility (CUGBF) helps investigators use the latest genomics technologies in their research. The heart of our facility is Illumina’s Nextseq 2000 NGS platform, which offers high throughput sequencing used in many applications such as whole-genome, transcriptome, and targeted resequencing. CUGBF offers services to support the use of the Nextseq 2000 from experimental design through bioinformatic deliverables. We also have a 10x Genomics Chromium X and Illumina Single Cell equipment for single cell sequencing. In addition to offering a full-service genomics lab and bioinformatics team, we pride ourselves in offering training to students to work alongside our staff members to learn genomic and bioinformatic techniques. Outside of the lab, we offer training and informational workshops to Clemson’s diverse scientific community.

COBRE in Human Genetics and Genomics Core, Clemson University, Clemson, SC, and Greenwood Genetic Center, Greenwood, SC

The Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Human Genetics constitutes a unique partnership between the Clemson University Center for Human Genetics and the Greenwood Genetic Center. Research in the COBRE in Human Genetics focuses on understanding the genetic, genomic, and epigenetic mechanisms by which molecular genetic variation affects rare and common diseases.

South Carolina Translational Research Improving Musculoskeletal Health  (SC TRIMH) (COBRE) and Research Cores, Clemson University, Clemson, SC

SC TRIMH’s primary mission is to develop a new generation of NIH-funded investigators by providing the intellectual expertise needed for one-on-one and group mentoring opportunities to early-stage and/or new investigators, financial support for investigators to obtain preliminary data and research infrastructure, through dedicated scientific cores, necessary for investigators to be successful in competing for NIH research awards. The specific aims are to:

Expand the critical mass of funded investigators conducting musculoskeletal research

Strengthen innovative scientific cores that support and advance musculoskeletal research

Advance the ongoing development of an independent, sustainable, multidisciplinary thematic program.

FCCA Core, Center for Dietary Supplements and Inflammation (CDSI), USC School of Medicine, Columbia, SC

The scientific mission of the CDSI is to investigate how compounds derived from botanicals and natural products can attenuate inflammation, as well as understand the mechanisms that trigger chronic inflammatory diseases. Inflammation plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of not only autoimmune diseases but also a wide range of clinical disorders including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, obesity, aging, and cancer. 

The FCCA Core of the CDSI is located at Building 1 of the School of Medicine at the VA hospital campus. The major equipment in the FCCA Core include: BD FACS Celesta BVR, BD FACSymphony A5 SE, RS 2000 X-Ray Biological Irradiator, BD FACSymphony Sorter, Agilent Seahorse XFe96 Analyzer, Illumina NextSeq 550, 10x Chromium, Buxco for testing pulmonary function, and Vizgen Merscope Spatial Transcriptomics.
