SC INBRE is keeping a close watch on the developments of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 and how it relates to our annual Science Symposium to be held on Saturday, January 22. If it is necessary to change from an in person to virtual format, that information will be posted here, on our social and in our newsletter.

2022 Science Symposium Call for Abstracts, Abstract Guideline Information and Abstract Template

It’s time once again to showcase all of the awesome research funded by SC INBRE. Now accepting abstracts for “Lucky 13” –13th Annual SC INBRE Science Symposium to take place in person at the Russell House University Union on the UofSC Columbia campus on Saturday, January 22, 2022, check-in beginning at 8 am ET.

Posters are invited from SC INBRE-funded students, faculty and teachers. (Only the student posters will be judged.)

Due to time limitations, podium presentations will be limited to SC INBRE BIPP, DRP and SIRP grant recipients.

Overview

SC INBRE-funded research must have been conducted within the last year.
Abstracts (all presenters) are due Friday, December 10, 5 pm EST. No abstracts will be accepted after the deadline.
Please pay careful attention to the Guidelines and adhere to them. Abstracts will not be accepted if they are not in proper format. An Abstract Template is provided (see below).
All abstracts will submitted online! No paper submission will be accepted.

Eligibility

As this is SC INBRE’s Science Symposium, abstracts are accepted for research with financial support from SC INBRE’s funding mechanisms: Bioinformatics Pilot Project Program, Developmental Research Project Program, Student-Initiated Research Project Program, Research Experiences for Teachers and network institutional awards, as well as from our outreach institutions.

Submitting an Abstract

An Abstract Template is provided. Complete the areas in red and change the color back to black. See the Abstract Guidelines below for specific information. You must follow the Guidelines for your abstract to be accepted.

If you have a Gmail account, use this link to submit your abstract to us.

No Gmail? No problem! Fill out the abstract submission form without uploading your abstract and then email your abstract to scinbre@gmail.com. You must complete the submission form prior to emailing your abstract.

Abstracts must be received by the deadline of Friday, December 10, 5 pm EST. No late abstracts will be accepted.

Abstracts submitted without an accompanying submission form will not be accepted.

Important Notice about Logos!

When designing your poster, DO NOT download just SC INBRE logo you may find on web! Any logos you find on the internet are VERY LOW RES and will not reproduce well on your presentation. Use the LOGOS page under the Toolbox under the Resources tab above for logo download links, as well as Acknowledgement Statements and other helpful information.

Symposium Magazine

Faculty and students: Each year, SC INBRE gathers all publishable abstracts and compiles them into an online magazine. In addition to the abstracts, we love to feature YOU! Please send Cyndy a short write up of a description of how SC INBRE has impacted you - describing your research in lay-terms that anyone would be able to understand, tell us about your research experience, tell us how you participating impacted your life (changed your future goals), etc. This is optional (but would be much appreciated!). Your photo of you or a photo that represents your write up would also be appreciated. (See previous Symposiums for Magazine examples: 2021, 2019/2020, 2018).

Abstract Guidelines and Template

Pay close attention to these. Your abstract will not be accepted if it does not follow the guidelines. The Abstract Template is downloadable by clicking here!

Title

Style and format of the Title: ALL CAPS, bolded text.
Title length: maximum of three lines
An abstract must have a short, specific title (containing no abbreviations) that indicates the nature of the investigation.

Authors and Affiliations

Use as many lines as needed.
List authors by First and Last name, underlining the presenting author(s).
Bold the name of the mentor.
Indicate the department, institution and city for all authors. High School Student Poster Presenters: Include the name of your high school as your affiliation. You should also acknowledge the institution where you did your research.
You can use superscript 1,2,3 to group authors with the same address, so that you only list each address once.
List all authors first, each with his/her mark, and then the affiliation of each group of authors.
The submitting author is designated as the primary and presenting author. You may rearrange the order of the authors, however, always list the senior author last. The presenting author can be listed anywhere in the author block.

Abstract Text Format

Font: Arial
Size: 11 pt
Abstract must be contained in one page with margins of 1” all around.
Only use left justification.
Leave a blank line between code and title, title and authors with affiliations, and between authors with affiliations and abstract text.

Abstract Contents

- - It is your responsibility to use accurate grammar and check spelling. Proofread abstracts carefully to avoid errors before submission deadline. The abstract will be published exactly as it has been submitted – NO EXCEPTIONS.
  - Abstracts should have the following identifiable sections: Introduction/Background, Hypothesis/Goal of Study, Methods and Results, and Conclusions. These fields can be edited or deleted as appropriate for your work.
  - Describe briefly the objectives of the study unless they are contained in the title. Include a brief statement of methods. State findings in detail sufficient to support conclusions.
  - Do not begin sentences with numerals.
  - Standard abbreviations may be used without definition. Non-standard abbreviations (kept to a minimum) must be placed in parentheses after the first use of the word or phrase abbreviated.
  - Do not include references, credits or grant support.
  - Abstracts are limited to 1,950 characters (about 300-350 words). This includes the text plus any graphics, but not the title or authors.
  - You can insert figures in your abstract, but be careful to place them within the limits of the page and insert them correctly into the text.
  - You can also place symbols into the abstract, but double-check that they transfer correctly when the abstract is converted to PDF.
  - If you want to insert mathematical or chemical formulas, change them to images and insert them into the abstract as if they were pictures.
