Bert Ely, III, Ph.D.


Bert Ely is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina where he teaches genetics, biotechnology, and introductory biology. His current research focuses on bacterial and bacteriophage genome evolution. Currently four PhD students and five undergraduates are working on a variety of research projects in his laboratory. In addition as the Director of the Center for Science Education, he helps train science teachers to enhance the quality of science education in South Carolina. Other activities include running a 12 month post baccalaureate program to help minority students to get accepted into and succeed in PhD programs around the country, and SCienceLab which provides an opportunity for middle and high school science teachers to bring their students to USC for a day of hands-on science experiments.
